Hey I have a Pal Shph5502 unit that is hanging on the black PlayStation logo screen. Does this version need the extra BIOS point soldered in? If so where are these located or at least what are they commonly referred to as on old mod chip diagrams. Any help would be appreciated.

No. The only PAL unit with that territory lockout is the SCPH-110 (PSone).

Ah ok. So far I've followed the instructions and connected Gate, Data, Lid, VCC and gnd but I'm still having issues with launching my NTFS copy of FFVIII. Any ideas?

FF8, hmm. I know the PAL version is libcrypt protected and stops on a black screen *after* the black PS logo screen.
You may want to check if the NTSC version has extra protection.
Also try a different game to verify your modchip install works.
