I'm experiencing a very similar issue on a model 1001. Startup sound is distorted, nearly the same as in the video linked in this thread. System looks to be in mint condition (as are the controllers), screw removals cracked loose and inside is pristine. Probed every chip pin around the audio section of the board, compared continuity against probing points around the board - there does not appear to be a disconnected solder joint. CD music plays fine, splash screen/startup music and most in-game sounds are distorted.
Really don't want to give up on this board, nor change too much - it's difficult to find a system in such clean condition throughout after 25 years.

I know this is old, but did anything ever come of this? Going through something similar now too, except mine isn't a mint new PSX. Just an old SCPH 1001
