Hi to the PSXDev scene

Post by gadget » July 30th, 2014, 10:53 am

Hi! No idea what made me look into PS1 dev again. Just something I typed in out of the blue to see if it still existed.

I used to code a little bit for the PS1 back during the Yaroze days and did a few demos with a group called Gridlock.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and give a few zipfiles to the community. I'm attaching two files.

One is the source code to the psx demo Hynopuppy that I wrote back in 1998. The binary is actually included in the psyq zip file in the psxdev.net downloads section under the psyq\bin\OtherTools\ntscpup directory :)

The second zip file is the source code to the win32 version of gridfix_win.exe which is also included in the psyq\bin\OtherTools directory.

Not sure how well any of this code still works, but you are all welcome to do what ever you want with them.

I did get out my PS1 and Xploder cart and then realized my current system doesn't have a parallel port. Guess I'll have to fix that.

Wow, it's great to meet you Gadget! You have a good memory since as soon as you mentioned 'Hynopuppy', it rang a bell for me and I too recalled it being in the (messy) 4.6 Psy-Q upload :P

Thanks for the gridfix source code.
You need a parallel port with the 0x378 address and for it to support SPP mode. I could never get it to work under Windows 7, so just find yourself a good old Windows 98 machine and use that :)
Development Console: SCPH-5502 with 8MB RAM, MM3 Modchip, PAL 60 Colour Modification (for NTSC), PSIO Switch Board, DB-9 breakout headers for both RGB and Serial output and an Xplorer with CAETLA 0.34.

PlayStation Development PC: Windows 98 SE, Pentium 3 at 400MHz, 128MB SDRAM, DTL-H2000, DTL-H2010, DTL-H201A, DTL-S2020 (with 4GB SCSI-2 HDD), 21" Sony G420, CD-R burner, 3.25" and 5.25" Floppy Diskette Drives, ZIP 100 Diskette Drive and an IBM Model M keyboard.

I was surprised at all the random stuff I found In the psyq zip. I have a bunch of tools/source on my hard drive still from then, I'll see what else I can find that may be useful. Most doesn't run on current OS's.

I've got a couple of old machines lying around, I'll have to see what hardware is in them. Something must still have a parallel port and still work :)
