'Ed by ed by' strange issue on boot up

Post by penney85 » March 21st, 2025, 2:34 am

I'm getting a strange issue on SCPH1002. PSX logo screen removes letters and always says 'ed by ed by' on all games. Refuses to load on some discs, and crashes on company logo FMVs on others. Please see photos.

I've tried replacing the laser but no change whatsoever. I've had it since 1997 and had a mod chipped installed couple years after that. Never had any trouble with it in the past other than occasionally needing to put it upside down to the read discs (with old laser).

Well yes, that is a known issue, but why do you start a new topic on that?

There was only one other but no solution. Can delete this thread if you'd like though.

There are two relevant threads, albeit none with a proper thread name referring to the problem.
Now that you have created a dedicated thread name, we could keep that, but need links to the other threads...

Both are saying that you need to replace the CXD1815Q or CXD1199BQ chip.
Alternately, use some psx-cdrom-emulation hardware that does completely bypass the broken chip.

Thank you, ok let's keep this thread then. I'll look into it and report back.

Has anyone tried disabling or removing an old modchip to see if it fixes graphical glitches on bootup? How difficult is it to fully revert a modded SCPH-1002 back to stock?
