Andy Gavin was talking about the GTE on the R3000A which was fast at doing vector based calculations. In the early SDK from Sony/SN Systems when Crash 1 was being developed, there was no strong documentation surrounding it so one of the guys at Sony shared how it worked on a little scrap of paper. There was also the MDEC decoder, but I don't believe they used that since it's solely used for decoding MDEC frames.

I am quite sure most (if not all) PS1 3D video games used the GTE for vector-based calculations, as it was explicitly designed for such purpose.
