PS1 Are my memory cards faulty?

So I just recently got an SCPH-7502, seems to work really well, plays games and so on. It came without memory cards, however.

I have since got some memory cards, but something odd is happening, the cards all came with saves already on them, and I was able to copy saves from the other cards to each of the other cards using the memory manager filling all 15 blocks, this led me to believe the cards were fine.

I freed up some space on a few of the cards and fired up gran turismo 1, however when I try to save a game to any of the cards, the game states the card is faulty, but the memory card manager happily copies saves to and from all of the cards.

Is there any way to test if the cards are in fact faulty?

There's no way to really test them without making a custom program and writing some code, but I would just do a full format using the Sony development example to erase everything (which will include the recovery sectors).

Also, be weary that if you're playing the NTSC version of Gran Turismo and trying to load a PAL save, it will not work which might be actually another reason why you're seeing that error when I think about it more.
