Is this normal on a SCPH-1000 or a fault

I'm getting flickering sprites in training mode on Tekken 3 on my SCPH-1000 japanese PS1 console. No mods have been applied to the console.

Is the console faulty or is this normal on a SCPH-1000 console on this game. It's the only game I have to test on the console.

Interesting. I guess this is because the SCPH-1000 PU-7 uses the old GPU?

I don't get the flickering on my SCPH-5500 in this game.

Yes, it uses the old GPU with VRAM (not SGRAM).
