Yopaz IceStar, New Puzzle game, PSIO ready

Post by Orion_ » October 20th, 2013, 12:55 am

I made a new puzzle game for the Playstation 1 / PSone, called Yopaz IceStar !

Image

You play as a little character named Yopaz and you must collect all the stars in the universe,
but the vacuum of space forces you to slide indefinitely when you run in one direction.
Only an ice wall will stop you in your tracks!
With this unusual constraint, you will need to collect all stars on each level.

This puzzle game features 40 levels in 3 worlds, local highscore to beat the best time with your friends, Infinite levels possibility using the built in Level Editor, and an exclusive PocketStation minigame !

The world "Advanced" provides additional features for seasoned players.
You will be able to change your color and collect stars of the corresponding color!
Your color will also allow you to go through teleporters, direction changers, or even protect you from enemies!

Video of the full game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOWDbXw-c6s

The game was available for sale on CD, but it's now sold out.
Buy & Download it here: https://orionsoft.itch.io/yopaz-icestar
(PSIO ready, CU2/BMP cover included)

This. Is. AWESOME. Did you make the disc artwork using a CD-ROM printer?

Seems like nobody is interested in new quality homebrew for the Playstation
It's a bit sad because it's my favorite console, but if no one wants games for it I will give up...
For my next project I will try kickstarter, it might be more relevant

Maybe you should send some famous Youtube game reviewer a free copy to get the word out.
Majority of the people are unaware that there is an alive homebrew PS1 scene surfacing.
Dev console: SCPH-7502, FreePSXBoot, CH340 serial cable.

That's a really good idea Shendo. You should never give up that easily Orion_.
As Shendo said, send some copies to popular YouTube gamers such as lukemorse1.

Orion_ don't get depressed
First, you don't do it for the fame :) but for yourself. If you want fame and money develop for other platforms.

Second. The Playstation generation is mainly made of people that use the technology and discard it once obsolete.
We are somehow like the exiled in Fahrenheit 451, reading aloud a book longtime burned so it won't get forgotten.

Third. Kickstarter isn't the almighty incubator that generates money whatever the project. It is very selective and much of the well-known success stories surf the wave of enthusiasm generated by big names behind. If you are unknown to the world it will be hard either with or without Kickstarter.

just my 2 .cents.

Oh and by the way, I really appreciate the support you're providing ;-)

Thank you, the CD has been sent today :)
The complete source code of the game is hidden on the CD, you need to find it, but if you do, please do not spread it on the internet ! it's only a bonus for people who bought the game.
But, let me tell you, it's really not easy to learn from a complete game source code, it's not a little game, there is more than 3800 lines of code (not including my psx library).
Most of the time, when a complete game source code is found, no body do something with it, because it's too much work trying to dig into someone's code to understand.

I played the demo a few months ago and it was great fun, I'm so glad to see you've released it with such a professional presentation - I may buy a copy the next week. :)

Great job!

PD: BTW, where did you get the screen for the PS1?

My copy arrived yesterday. Such a great game! Some of the levels were very challenging - I'm wishing for my friends to play on some of my own levels.

I received my copy today. What you have done is excellent! The game was sealed in a plastic wrapper and you even used a black polycarbonate disc :P

I think the issue is that the cdrom doesn't work on an original PSX, it requires a mod chip or an emulator to play.
I'm also working on a Net Yaroze project  and would love it on CDROM what works on any PSX, and a PS3 for that matter :dance

I think kickstart is good if you have a demo/prototype and can do things like put people's names/faces/etc in your game.
There's also atariage/nintendoage which you should know about already being involved with the jaguar.
There's retro stores ie http://www.goatstore.com http://gamegavel.com etc
And someone mentioned, youtube channels.. there's a few guys that do just PSX.

Maybe contact Sony?
See if they can put your game on the store, plus network I think it's called.

When you got the cdrom's burnt/pressed, did you enquirer to see if the Sony wobble can be replicated?
I was reading that some runs are pressed of a master.
If we can get a few people (ie ROLL BOSS RUSH) which want a PSX playable cd, I'm sure the wobble setup would be worth while?
But, yes it's a shame, arguable the better console of the 90's and with many SDK's, docs! and it's C/C++!!
Very strange :shrug

That's a pretty cool idea!
And your 100% correct about anyone actually using your code
