Possible to start burned disc without modchip:
- use spring or something to keep cd-door button down so PlayStation boots from disc with cd-door open
- insert any original game disc and power on
- after disc stop, replace it with burned disc
- press "Game Start" to start

Disc swapping? Spring? Did you try using the cdrom controller's "secret unlock commands" instead?
They should work everywhere, except on japanese consoles, and except on very old consoles (those with the "C0h" firmware version, ie. around PU-7-mainboard era).
