To bad SCPH-5903 was never copied. With this bios we may have been able to bring VCD support too other models.

It's a shame 5903 hasn't been dumped, but something tells me it wouldn't matter anyways since it's probably using a regular ROM (fact: it can play regular games, so it's got to have all the vanilla features for legacy) with the VCD parts embedded somewhere else in the hardware.

I thought that too but i stumbled across the specs for that model and it had the same ram, processor, and additional hardware was not mentioned. You need too think, even the unofficial VCD mod piggybacks the bios, so it can play the disks, so even if it had the hardware embedded the bios would be different. It would be cool too see.

I reckon it would be in the BIOS or in the Mechanism Controller.
Last thing I would expect is a custom GPU or even a CPU bus attachment for processing the VCD.

Well, maybe this photo will explain a lot about the PlayStation VCD Player (SCPH-5903).
It is a custom attachment plugged into the bus
I would like to thank Lingjr Wai Hung Barry, for the photo inside of his PS1 VCD console.
I see a separate processor for the VCD processing, DRAM and maybe SRAM which would be most likely for buffering, a controller that looks like a mechacon (mechanism controller), 3x crystal oscillators I believe, a foam block for padding against the steel chassis to keep the board stable, a mosfet/transistor for VREG and a tiny chip next to it probably acting as the audio converter. There also seem to be two plastic PCB mounts holding the VCD board to the main PlayStation board.
It is most likely plugged into the CD-ROM controller which would have a socket.

I wish i had the money to buy this unit, take off that board and see how exactly sony officially extended the functionality of their device. I am quite sad that there was a second processing unit inside though as the bios is less useful now.

As expected, it's just additional hardware for extending the capability of the console to reproduce VCD. Seems very similar to what the VCD extention for the Saturn does.

This looks just like a daughterboard, I guess is a DB.
No service manual?

That one is for SCPH-900x only (AFAIK), and it uses a Winbond W9925QF, is very limited, and I don't think VCD on nowdays is any useful at all (we're on blu-ray era after all, and soon 4K resolution).

Good post! I was not aware of such a device.
It proves my theory about the chip stacking though a socket though as the original VCD PCB would do
I don't see a use for this though. It looks like A LOT, of hard work to solder it and install it all, only to play VCD's.
PSIO will do much, so much more, yet it is only plug and play... Just wait and see what we have up our sleeves
