Playstation Classic Mini Disc project

Post by ponlork » March 17th, 2020, 6:22 pm

So there's a new Playstation replica case being released by Bandai later this month on March 29, 2020. It's called BEST HIT CHRONICLE 2/5 “PlayStation”(SCPH-1000)

It even has a flippable lid. I'm not a expert at these things but how feasible would it be to include a Playstation Classic or a single board computer in there such as the Raspberry Pi Zero W, along with a optical disc drive that can read Mini DVD/CDs, then use it in conjunction with the Retroarch Disc Project to read burned PS1 discs? I understand that the Retroarch Disc Project only supports the Beetle PSX core at the moment which runs rather slow on the PSC, but I think in the future it'll perform faster.

I actually got this idea a year ago with the Playstation Classic where I was going to convert the case into a flip top cover and attempt to put a DVD drive in there:

I commissioned a friend months ago to modify the PSC case for me, he just started on it last night. First he attempted to do it on a cheap China clone version by Data Frog that I got from Aliexpress, it came out looking okay. He's going to sand it and make it look smooth.

But then today I stumbled on this new case by Bandai and I placed a pre-order for this case. I'm still going to have my friend go through with the official Sony Playstation Classic case mod but I'll try it on the Bandai case too when it releases.

Again I'm not a expert at any of this. I'm practically a noob when it comes to electrical engineering, programming, compiling code, modifying the kernel to include modules in order to support optical drives, I mean I read about it and have a basic understanding of it but I have little to no experience. I'm going to have to just learn everything on the fly as I go along. But first things first is getting a case with a flippable lid.

I'm waiting on the Bandai replica to arrive but I seen some videos of it and it's looks significantly smaller than a Playstation Classic.

So I went ahead and gave my friend the greenlight to mod the PSC case.

Hopefully he'll be able to fit the DVD drive inside

Currently the PSC doesn't recognize optical drives, what I have in mind is to leave the Drive inside where I plug the USB into a laptop to test and make sure the DVD drive is working properly with Retroarch while in the case.

If all goes well, then I'll research ways to edit the kernel to include optical drive support for the PSC

I was able to attach a CD/DVD drive Add-on to the Playstation Classic. The Beetle PSX core runs very slow on the PSC, I assume it's because it lacks a dynamic recompiler whatever that means. Hopefully libretro will add support for the PCSX rearmed core or possibly improve Beetle PSX, for now I'm happy just to see it functioning.

It does play Sega CD and Turbografx CD games at full speed though. It's intermittently crashing in the video but I discovered that my USB flash drive had corrupted data and inaccessible files due to me yanking the power plug to force a shut down. So I'll give it another test later when I reformat or scan the USB.

In addition to disc based games, it can also read Music CDs and DVD Movies. If more interest is generated, the developers might just update it to support more cores.

As for the fippable lid, well the Bandai case is significantly smaller than the PSC so that won't work unless I pay someone to do a 3D scan of it to replicate the case and blow it up in size.It might be something I'll consider in the future.

For now, I'm relying on a friend to mod my PSC case as well as cram a optical disc drive inside. He said he was close to finishing it but then he said he messed up and disappeared on me.

Here are some photos of the progress:
