Mastering a PSX disc for unmodded consoles.

Post by jowijo » November 7th, 2014, 3:44 pm

I am aware of the futility of such a question, and have seen the general answer as "No. Never", but I am asking this from a slightly different angle. While it is imposable to burn a PSX disc with a consumer CD/DVD/BD burner, are there any devices out there than can be modified to do so? Say I were to make a game, and want to distribute it. How would I go about doing that using CDs? I recall companies way back when manufacturing discs that somehow booted on the PS1 without a I/O connector, or modded console.

Either way, any info here would be welcome.

Pay a disc replication company to create a blank glass master from a PSX CD-ROM with the SCEx wobble intact.
As far as I know, that's how DATEL did it.
Development Console: SCPH-5502 with 8MB RAM, MM3 Modchip, PAL 60 Colour Modification (for NTSC), PSIO Switch Board, DB-9 breakout headers for both RGB and Serial output and an Xplorer with CAETLA 0.34.

PlayStation Development PC: Windows 98 SE, Pentium 3 at 400MHz, 128MB SDRAM, DTL-H2000, DTL-H2010, DTL-H201A, DTL-S2020 (with 4GB SCSI-2 HDD), 21" Sony G420, CD-R burner, 3.25" and 5.25" Floppy Diskette Drives, ZIP 100 Diskette Drive and an IBM Model M keyboard.

How were masters created for official games back in the day?

Is there any way that process could be replicated today to make a disc that could be played on unmodded consoles? Or is there a manual step between burning the master and getting the wobble on the final copies?

Or would I need special blank media? I saw something that mentioned mastering blanks.

They were pressed.

Yes, you can replicate it, but you'd need to ask the pressing company to replicate the security where the ATIP on the CD-R would exist from a pressed Sony disc.
