Wipeout 2097 disc format

I remember this game for having a bizarre disc layout, in fact when inserted in a PC drive you coud see the audio tracks as
.wav files, which is strange because they could be read also as a normal audio cd, so nominally a mixed mode (data+cd audio), so how could it be possible to see the audio tracks as .wav files and at the same time be played as CDDA tracks, is this some peculiar undocumented cd layout?
