Hello, everyone.

The little black circle that holds the disc on my 5501 has had a tab broken off of it. I don't want to replace it with one from another PlayStation because I remember when I was younger, I always had the same problem breaking that little piece. I never broke one on the PlayStation 2 though, so I was thinking I would replace it with something like that. I figure I'll replace the motor too, since I'm seeing it all as on piece.



I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem in the past, or am I just slamming discs into it like a barbarian?

Usually they eventually crack. It's normal. You can swap it with another, but depending on the shaft, it may not fit correctly. A fraction of a millimetre and it won't grip well. I'd look for replacements online that are labelled specially for the PSX. You will also need to make sure you get the height correct, because if it's too high or too low, the disc's ride height will be incorrect and the servo mechanics will have issues tracking.

Thanks for the input, now I know this is a common problem. That's give me more reason to not go back with the original part. I guess it's time start measuring.

Another though: would happen if I replaced the motor with a faster one?

Nothing, because it wouldn't do anything more yet alone even work.

You can use a spindle drive from a notebook (be carefull, should be in metal)
And for the RF-300a (motor spindle), with a WD-40 the drive should be more fast, also eliminate the motor gripping problem.
