Reading MDC FMV video files from Psychic Detective

Post by human » February 1st, 2023, 5:19 am

Is it possible to rip and replace FMV video files from a playstation game?

Specifically, I have extracted the BIN from Psychic Detective only to be met with an assortment of "MDC" compressed video files. The game must decompress and play these on the fly. I've tried every known PSX tool known to mankind.

Any ideas on this one? Thank you.

.BIN is short for disc image in CUE/BIN format
.MDC is short for MDEC aka just another name for .STR files

The game is from Electronic Arts, whom are known to come up with unusual STR file variants:

I wasn't aware of that Psychic Detective variant: It's apparently somewhere between the "Oldest" and "Older" variants.

This tool can decode (and encode) many STR files: https://github.com/m35/jpsxdec/ I have exchanged emails with the author last year, and he didn't mention that Psychic Detective variant, so it's probably unsupported (but it looks as if it would require only minor changes to the audio chunk handling).
