Making 3d games with psy-q

Post by Skateboi101 » July 17th, 2019, 6:09 pm

I was wondering if you could make a game using psyq that uses the full ps1's graphics potential. Like for example making a game that looks just a good a metal gear solid on the ps1. Is this possible with psyq or do you need a net yaroze system in order to do this

Games like that wrote their own 3D engine. Psy-Q can achieve the same outcome but it isn't optimised so you'll have a game which runs pretty horribly.

The Net Yaroze SDK is basically the same as Psy-Q but with a few limited things (mostly MDEC reduced functionality).
Development Console: SCPH-5502 with 8MB RAM, MM3 Modchip, PAL 60 Colour Modification (for NTSC), PSIO Switch Board, DB-9 breakout headers for both RGB and Serial output and an Xplorer with CAETLA 0.34.

PlayStation Development PC: Windows 98 SE, Pentium 3 at 400MHz, 128MB SDRAM, DTL-H2000, DTL-H2010, DTL-H201A, DTL-S2020 (with 4GB SCSI-2 HDD), 21" Sony G420, CD-R burner, 3.25" and 5.25" Floppy Diskette Drives, ZIP 100 Diskette Drive and an IBM Model M keyboard.

can you create a game as good as metal gear solid on your PC with bare OpenGL ? (no tool, no unity, no unreal engine, just C language and Open GL)
if you can, then, the next level is do it on the PS1 which is even more difficult.
personally, I cannot.

psyq gives you the best chance, because that is what game developers used.

Whether you can achieve it will come down to your own skill.
