I was able to mod a 7000 and 7501 PlayStation to display correct colors in PAL mode without having to do an oscillator mod. You basically do the same mod shown in the first post of this thread but instead of connecting the indicated via to ground you connect it to 3.5v which you can find a pad of near the power connector on the mainboard.

This will make the console produce a weird NTSC50 signal when running in PAL mode which multi-standard CRT TVs can accept without issue but LCD TVs and video capture cards tend to not like very much so modding a PAL unit to output NTSC as PAL60 is better in the long run as PAL60 is supported better.

You don't have to use a crystal oscillator if you know how to build a simple XTAL based oscillator, but a sealed oscillator will always provide a much more accurate running clock :)

The 'QXO-1100' must be 5V TTL or CMOS. The frequency you need is 4.433MHz as mentioned in the first post :P
Hello

I know this is a older theath but i have been modding some old PSX with the PSNee modchip.
I have the problem now the older models give black an white picture with ntsc games.

Are there any alternatives for the QXO-1100, on a site like aliexpess that you know ?
I want to sell the modded PSX, so i want a permanate fix

Well, as I warned in the other thread:
This mod will give you color, but it will look very bad. Moving dot crawl all over the screen bad.
If you want to sell the console, it's better to just include an RGB cable.

As far as I know, these mods aren't being made anymore. You'd have to build it yourself, possibly using a guide for a different console (same principle of supplying an external NTSC color carrier clock).
Here is a guide for Mega Drive, for example: https://assemblergames.com/threads/mod- ... tal.49686/

But honestly, it's not worth the trouble with a simple mod like this.
A better mod would somehow synchronize the carrier clock with the system, or simply replace the PAL main oscillator with an NTSC one.

Hey Rama3

Yeah you right. I just ordered some RGB scart cables from AliExpress
But they still give black and white image.

How do I know I order the right cables or can I modify the ones I got ?

Is the picture also noisy and unsharp?
If so, the TV probably expects a signal that the cable doesn't provide (RGB switch signal).
This is rare, even with cheap cables, so idk.

Lift pin 157 on the GPU and tie the pad as seen in the 7502 photo high to Vcc (3.50V) instead of Gnd (0V).

thanks

GND is for PAL consoles.
VCC is for NTSC consoles.

Hi there !

For the SCPH-7502, there seems to be an alternative way of doing this :

EDIT : After checking the traces on my PU-22, it seems fine for a PAL SCPH-7502.
Here is the other side of the board with the contact points circled :

Can someone tell me if you can do this PAL60 mod on the PU-8 with the QXO-1100 alongside the reference oscillator mod for PU-8 :

I already did the the double oscillator mod and I would also like PAL colors with NTSC games when using composite or s-video.

Hello, looking for some help on b&w on ntsc games on a PAL 5502 machine.

I have tried a working RGB cable (checked inside scart and has 180ohm resistor and 3 caps on R, B,G signals) but my tv shows b and w pic and flashing screen.

I tried my Megadrive RGB machine, and my Saturn RGB cabled machine and they both display perfectly.

If i use the PS1 RGB cable into an upscaler for HDMI output it detects it as an RGB signal so i know the cable and ps1 are working ok ish...

Is there any way i can fix this or do i need to buy say a 7xxx series machine for better results?

Any help apreciated.

For a 5502, you need an external crystal oscillator.

Hi, i have tried finding a 4.443 oscillator but seems they dont make them any more, certainly not available from the shops ive been looking at in UK, RS, digikey, amazon, ebay.

Do they still make them? Is there an easy alternative.

Bit of an update, ive tried this 5502 ps1 on 3 different TV's using 3 different RGB enabled cables and still plays in black and white, does the 5502 not have RGB functionality? or is it faulty?

Could be faulty, especially if someone has worked on it before.

Ok, more updates. I borrowed a friends 9000 model ps1 and it booted straight into a usa game in colour using my cables and my tv.

Whilst my ps1 isnt technically faulty as it plays PAL games play perfectly over the RGB cable on this pal machine.

So no idea why it doesnt work for Japanese and American games and dont know how to start testing the machine either.

The later model PAL machines (SCPH-7002, SCPH-7502 and SCPH-9002) will produce NTSC-4.43 when running NTSC software. This was the output format typically used by multi-standard VCRs when playing back NTSC tapes, so a lot of Euro spec TVs can handle it.

I suspect your TV is not using the RGB signals for some reason and the the SCPH-9002 is working in color because it's generating a composite format that the TV can handle.

Thats what i dont get, my TV definitly supports RGB my Saturn RGB cable works, my Amstrad 6128 RGB cable works and my Megadrive RGB cable works.

It has a very old non stealth modchip installed, would that matter?

Is there any signals i can check? I know the voltage to pin 16 is there i checked that.
