17w VS 10w: is there a difference?

I looked but couldn't find a definitive answer. I wanted to know why Japanese and European models are rated 10w whereas American ones, at least up until the 7501, are rated 17w. specially because the 9001 is also rated 10w.

do the boards/power supplies even use different components between regions?

OK, this is serious necroposting, but in case anyone else has the same question the answer is basically no.

It's just a difference in the way that UL used to calculate nameplate power ratings compared to pretty much anyone else in the world. This especially tended to show up on small switch mode supplies like the one in the PSX that have poor power factors and high peak currents.

Note that this is historical - the standards were changed around 2000 or so and the UL power ratings are now broadly comparable with the ones everyone else uses.
