Mod chip for PAL SCPH-1002?

Post by JohnoUK » December 4th, 2012, 6:06 am

Hi all,

To cut a long story short my original PSX died years ago and got binned. This week, while clearing the attic I came across my old PSX games and really want to play them again. Some of these games are US releases, so I need to make my new PSX region free.

I've managed to buy a SONY refurbished PlayStation (PAL SCPH-1002) from eBay and now I need to mod it so I can play all my old great imports. I didn't mod my previous PSX myself so I don't exactly know what I'm doing, which is why I'm here!

I've never programmed a chip before so first of all I was wondering if someone could tell me what chip I need, and possibly provide it pre-programmed? (Stealth chip I believe?) I'll happily pay a reasonable amount. I'd rather not purchase a PIC programming kit as I'll only be using it on this occasion.

I've soldered many times before, so if I can get a chip and some photos of what to solder, I'm pretty sure I'll have no difficulties.

So, a few things;
- Which modchip do I need for a PAL SCPH-1002?
- Can anyone hook me up with a pre-programmed chip?
- Is there a guide of how to install the required chip into my SCPH-1002?

Massive thanks,
Johno

We used to sell modchips, but PayPal banned us because of it. We can't take another risk.
Maybe I'll setup a personal merchant system. I'll let you know how I go.

They're getting harder to find. It doesn't help that modchips are illegal to sell in most developed countries now.

Thanks for the info Estacaco. Correct me if I'm wrong but those chips aren't flashed? Ideally I'd like to get one that's pre-flashed so I can just glue it and solder the wires into place. I don't really want to get a PIC programmer if I can really help it.

PSXDEV, I only realised you guys used to sell them after I'd posted the original message. Did you used to sell them programmed and ready to solder?

I read the reviews on some of those chips and it doesn't sound like you have to program them. The people writing reviews didn't even have soldering experience never mind PIC programming.

Thanks Estacaco, well spotted, I hadn't seen the reviews.
I'll get one ordered. I might pickup a few spares too :)

Ordered :D

Surely you'll find some service that'll allow you to accept payment for them?
PSX modchips are virtually impossible to find online these days. They're "as rare as rocking horse shit" :D

Do either of you have a wiring diagram for a PAL SCPH-1002 PlayStation?
I currently have no idea where I'm soldering this chip to haha.
