Simple (?) question about Parallel I/O

Post by NITROYUASH » November 12th, 2018, 10:32 am

So, my PSOne is half-dead (Press F to Pay Respects ;_;) and now i'm looking for PS Fat with Parallel I/O port for testing some PS-EXE on a real hardware. What do i need for this (except compatible console)? A special cartridge + parallel printer cable to usb, right?

So... What cartridges can i use for this method? Only Xplorer FX with Caetla?

I believe you are correct.
If you have an ISA slot and a comms card any action replay will work.. but
Alternatively, you can solder a serial to USB cable to the PSONE , danhans42 the man! :praise 8-)
It mentions Net Yaroze, but I'm sure it's SERIALPSX compatible? :shrug

You can use any Xplorer/Xploder/X-Terminator cartridge (FX/Pro DX models aren't a requirement).
Flash it with NO$CASH Kernel Clone - New Expansion ROM Version.
You may then apply this mod.
You'll need a parallel printer cable and a computer with a native parallel port.
(I'm using old IBM T42/T43 notebooks running Win98/Xp, also tried a Port Replicator Docking Station for my E6540 laptop and that worked too).

With that setup i can upload exe using no$psx's exe upload function. :)
I'm not doing much beside testing my PSF rips but that's working great.

Also PSIO should be getting exe upload via usb in the future.

Can i use a modern PC?

For this specific use i got it working on Windows 10 x86 with my Dell Latitude E6540 laptop using a PR02X docking station.
(Nocashio driver doesn't seem to work with X64 versions).

Legacy parallel port is required, i don't think usb adapters emulating it would work unless someone else gave a try.

For modern desktop computers that don't have parallel port, this specific board might work.
Maybe Orion_ could recommend you one.

Sadly it won't work with x64 systems -> "Nocashio Driver Failure" :shrug

If you really want to keep using Win7 x64 you might check Orion_'s tutorial for using caetla/catflap_inpout32 instead.
Catflap's exe upload is slower than no$psx but that should cover your needs.

Finaly, you need a not so common "action replay" called, the "Xplorer FX".
No other action replay will work, even if you think that your action replay have a parallel port, it doesn't !
Only the Xplorer FX have a port that can be plug directly into your PC parallel port !
It's true?

As far as i know yes.
As mentionned by Gwald, Datel Action Replay / GameShark require an isa comms link card such as this one:

Doesn't need to be an FX, I use a Xplorer pro as well.

There are always plenty on eBay, you can pick them up for as little as £6-10

Yup, FX/Pro DX models aren't a requirement.
Sorry for the confusion i was focusing on this part of the quote:
No other action replay will work, even if you think that your action replay have a parallel port, it doesn't !
Any Xplorer/Xploder/X-Terminator variant will work.

It says it supports SPP mode, so yes, in theory that should work but I know that Windows XP has problems with direct parallel port communication and you need to use something like "GiveIO". There's heaps of information already on the forums so do a little searching :)
Development Console: SCPH-5502 with 8MB RAM, MM3 Modchip, PAL 60 Colour Modification (for NTSC), PSIO Switch Board, DB-9 breakout headers for both RGB and Serial output and an Xplorer with CAETLA 0.34.

PlayStation Development PC: Windows 98 SE, Pentium 3 at 400MHz, 128MB SDRAM, DTL-H2000, DTL-H2010, DTL-H201A, DTL-S2020 (with 4GB SCSI-2 HDD), 21" Sony G420, CD-R burner, 3.25" and 5.25" Floppy Diskette Drives, ZIP 100 Diskette Drive and an IBM Model M keyboard.
