Radical Replacement Question
Has anyone ever replaced the laser assembly of the PlayStation with one from, say, a CD player, for example. Is this even possible?

Lubrication
I oiled the mechanical plastic pieces of my PS1 with Hoppe's No. 9 gun oil. I know some types of oil are bad for ABS, but good look finding the chemical composition of name brand lubricants. What lubricants have you guys used on your PlayStations and what are the results? So far the No. 9 oil has ad...

Re: Simple Upgrade
Thanks for the input, now I know this is a common problem. That's give me more reason to not go back with the original part. I guess it's time start measuring.

Custom Bios?
This may be a dumb question, but I'm not afraid to ask it. Is it possible to re-texture the bios? The PS1 still looks great, but the gross crayon-puke bios does not.

Re: Hot When Powered Off
Okay. Thanks for the replies, guys. I installed a switch on the AC cord from a lamp power cord like this.

Now I don't have to keep it unplugged to not waste power.

Hot When Powered Off
I have a 5501 I just got off ebay and I'm just getting reacquainted with the PlayStation. When it's not in operation and plugged in, it stays fairly hot. Unplugged, the bottom of the case on the power side was 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and after ten minutes of being plugged in it went to 84 degrees. Do...
