Re: tonyhax - PS1 softmod backup loader thing using THPS2/3

@socram Just a quick question: you state on your GitHub page that the tonyhax exploit won't work on Japanese PS1 consoles; however - am I correct in understanding that the buffer overflow exploit itself will still work on Japanese PS1 consoles, and that it is only the disc drive unlock codes that wo...

Re: New exploit - arbitrary code execution with ONLY a memory card (no game needed)

Well, that escalated quickly. Unfortunately on PSone it's not working. Hope it will tho. For some reason, the BIOS on the mini-PSone seemed to resemble the one from the older SCPH-100x/55xx models rather than the newer SCPH-7xxx/900x models (even though the mini-PSone was released afterwards), whic...

Re: New exploit - arbitrary code execution with ONLY a memory card (no game needed)

This is very impressive work! :) :) I'm not an expert on the PS1 (unfortunately) and so I'm not sure how much help I would be - but I really hope that you are able to get this exploit working. There are some really knowledgeable people on this forum who may be able to help you if required, and the a...

Re: tonyhax - PS1 softmod backup loader thing using THPS2/3

Yes, that is correct. v1.2.2 will have automatic patching of certain games with antimodchip - YuGiOh Forbidden Memories is one of them: https://github.com/socram8888/tonyhax/blob/master/patcher.c#L172 It'd be really cool if the tonyhax launcher also allowed users to switch the display mode between ...

Re: tonyhax - PS1 softmod backup loader thing using THPS2/3

i came across this video of someone testing Yugioh Forbidden Memories with tonyhax v1.2.1 and it got the Anti Piracy message. maybe there's a way around this? Interesting… I might be wrong, but I remember reading years ago that the anti-modchip code supposedly works by asking the CD drive to read...

Re: tonyhax - PS1 softmod backup loader thing using THPS2/3

oh and speaking of potential exploitable games, can you check NBA Jam T.E? it was a PS1 launch title and it auto load at the very first screen but what's interesting about this game is it doesn't give users the ability to save or load. The only time it saves is if we input initials and complete a g...

Re: tonyhax - PS1 softmod backup loader thing using THPS2/3

looks like there's going to be a lot of games to inspect. i don't fully grasp a lot of the concepts but maybe Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Collection, Kof 99 or Capcom vs SNK pro is worth looking into. Would it be possible for someone to say develop their own homebrew which will al...

Re: tonyhax - PS1 softmod backup loader thing using THPS2/3

do you think there'll exist a game that can boot directly into the exploit bypassing all the menus and stuff? that'll be awesome. I'll buy a boot disc of that if someone press it Certain games (such as Dead or Alive and Tekken) automatically load data from the memory card as soon as the game boots,...

Re: tonyhax - PS1 softmod backup loader thing using THPS2/3

Just a quick update. The title is a bit outdated. tonyhax since today (v1.2) works with all the following games: Great work (again), Socram. I have tested some more games over the weekend (using the instructions provided by ChampionLeake79 at: https://championleake.github.io/blog/PS1-StackSmashing/...

Re: tonyhax - PS1 softmod backup loader thing using THPS2/3

The only difficult part is maybe getting those memory card blocks onto a real Memory card. Some may not have a softmod PS2 or they may not be willing to put in the effort to buy a dexdrive or a PS3 Memory Card Adaptor. If you have a spare PS2 lying around, then I believe that it is now possible to ...

Re: tonyhax - PS1 softmod backup loader thing using THPS2/3

Is there any more info on the NO$CASH unlock? How the feature was left in the firmware? Does it disable the PS1 from looking for the security string? I don't know much about the no$psx CD unlock procedure (I'm sure that Socram and Shadow are both far more knowledgeable about this topic than me), bu...

Re: tonyhax - PS1 softmod backup loader thing using THPS2/3

@Socram I kicked myself when I heard about the tonyhax exploit yesterday, as I had tried to discover potential buffer overflow exploits in PS1 save games a few years ago (after hearing about the 007 / MechAssault exploits on the Original Xbox), but I gave up after a few games because I couldn’t fi...

Re: Black PlayStation ? (versus PSXSERIAL)

1) When Sony decided to launch a homebrew development platform for the PlayStation in 1996/7 (which later became the Net Yaroze), why did Sony demand that users had to purchase an entirely new black PlayStation, rather than simply creating a cheap PSXSERIAL type cable (and disc) which could attach ...

Re: Reverse Engineering the PSX Copy Protection (Wobble Groove)

For what it's worth, the "Modern Vintage Gamer" posted a video about PS1 security onto YouTube earlier today, and he mentioned at the ~6:15 mark that there were certain CD writers that could actually write the wobble sectors once flashed with custom firmware - followed by a photograph of a...

SCPH-7502 = Better graphics ? ("PS1.2")

I've been re-reading some old issues of EDGE Magazine (UK), and – according to reader correspondence in issues 67 & 68 from 1999 (see link below) – some people were claiming that newer models of the PlayStation / PS1 (presumably the SCPH-5552 or SCPH-7502 ?) featured slightly better graphics...

"Forward compatible" PS1 games w/ 8MB RAM?

Just a random thought – given that the PS1 can technically address up to 8MB of RAM (and the well-documented SCPH-5552 mod proves that it's possible to physically add this memory to an actual PlayStation), wouldn't it have been cool if some later PS1 games (such as Tekken 3) had been made "fo...

Re: Black PlayStation ? (versus PSXSERIAL)

This is the cartridge I'm talking about I've also seen that PSY-Q magazine advert before (along with a similar piece of kit for the Sega Saturn) After boot, it's a waste of time checking region/wobble, but later games do (Final fantasy) rechecks for the wobble signal. I don't totally agree that it'...

Re: Black PlayStation ? (versus PSXSERIAL)

1) Yes, and SN. Systems actually made their own professional debugging and development cartridge to replace the DTL-H2000. This is that blue cartridge that looks exactly like an Xplorer/Xploder. It has a yellow PCB inside with a coin battery and some Altera CPLD's. This never took off though, and S...

Re: Black PlayStation ? (versus PSXSERIAL)

Thanks for your responses. A few other thoughts:- 1)I agree that nobody would pay $1000 just for a serial cable and a few discs, but theoretically I would have thought this simpler kit (without a black PlayStation included) could have been sold for a lower price point of around $50 instead (and perh...
